How to fix d3dx.dll missing or not found.

What Is D3dx.dll?

D3dx.dll is a type of DLL file associated with Third-Party Application developed by Windows Software Developer for the Windows Operating System. The latest known version of D3dx.dll is 1.0, which was produced for Windows 7. This DLL file carries a popularity rating of 1 stars and a security rating of "UNKNOWN".

What Are DLL Files?

DLL ("dynamic link library") files such as d3dx.dll are small programs, similar to EXE ("executable") files, which allow multiple software programs to share the same functionality (eg. printing).
For example, let's say you are running Windows 7 and editing a document in Microsoft Word. The DLL file that controls printing does not need to load unless it's function is needed - eg. you decide to print your document. When you select "Print", Microsoft Word calls the printer DLL file, and it is loaded into memory (RAM) at that time. If you want to print a document in another program, Adobe Acrobat for example, that same printer DLL file will be used as well.

Why Do I Have DLL Errors?

Because they are shared files, DLL files exist outside of the software application itself. Although this provides many benefits for software developers, this separation also provides an opportunity for problems to occur.
Quite simply, if Windows cannot properly load your d3dx.dll file, you will encounter an error message. Please see "Causes of d3dx.dll Errors" below for more information.

When Do DLL Errors Occur?

DLL errors, such as those associated with d3dx.dll, most often occur during computer startup, program startup, or while trying to use a specific function in your program (eg. printing).

Common D3dx.dll Error Messages

The most common d3dx.dll errors that can appear on a Windows-based computer are:
  • "D3dx.dll not found."
  • "The file d3dx.dll is missing."
  • "D3dx.dll Access Violation."
  • "Cannot register d3dx.dll."
  • "Cannot find F:\Condor\d3dx.dll."
  • "Cannot start Third-Party Application. A required component is missing: d3dx.dll. Please install Third-Party Application again."
  • "This application failed to start because d3dx.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
These DLL error messages can appear during program installation, while a d3dx.dll-related software program (eg. Third-Party Application) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Keeping track of when and where your d3dx.dll error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem.

Causes of D3dx.dll Errors

Most d3dx.dll errors are related to missing or corrupt d3dx.dll files. Because d3dx.dll is an external file, it presents a great opportunity for something undesirable to occur.
Improperly shutting down your PC or getting a virus infection could corrupt the d3dx.dll, which could lead to DLL errors. When your d3dx.dll file becomes corrupt, it cannot be loaded properly and will present an error message.
Other times, d3dx.dll file errors could be related to issues in the Windows registry. Broken DLL file references can prevent your DLL file from registering properly, giving you a d3dx.dll error. These broken registry keys can be as a result of a missing DLL file, moved DLL file, or an leftover DLL file reference in your Windows registry from an unsuccessful software installation or uninstallation.
More specifically, these d3dx.dll errors can be caused by:
  • Invalid or corrupt d3dx.dll registry entry.
  • Virus or malware infection which has corrupted the d3dx.dll file.
  • Windows Software Developer hardware failure, such as a bad hard drive, which has corrupted the d3dx.dll file.
  • Another program overwrote the required version of d3dx.dll.
  • Another program maliciously or mistakenly deleted the d3dx.dll file.
  • Another program uninstalled the d3dx.dll file.

  • Caution: I do not recommend downloading d3dx.dll from "DLL download" sites. These sites distribute DLL files that are unapproved by the official d3dx.dll file developer, and can often be bundled with virus-infected or other malicious files. If you require a copy of d3dx.dll, it is recommended that you obtain it directly from Windows Software Developer.

Step 1: Manually Register D3dx.dll Using Microsoft Register Server

When you install software that uses the d3dx.dll dependency, the software should automatically register the file for you. In some cases your DLL file may not register properly, and as a result, will provide a "d3dx.dll not registered" error. Fortunately, you can use a built-in utility called "Microsoft Register Server" (regsvr32.exe) to re-register your d3dx.dll file.
How to re-register d3dx.dll from an elevated command prompt (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
    1. Click the Start button.
    2. Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
    3. While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
    4. You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
    5. Click Yes.
    6. Type the following command: regsvr32 /u d3dx.dll.
    7. Hit ENTER. This will UN-REGISTER your file.
    8. Type the following command: regsvr32 /i d3dx.dll.
    9. Hit ENTER. This will RE-REGISTER your file.
    10. Close the command prompt window.
    11. Re-start the program associated with d3dx.dll error.

Step 2: Repair Invalid D3dx.dll Registry Entries

Sometimes d3dx.dll and other DLL system errors can be related to problems in the Windows registry. Several programs can share the same d3dx.dll file, but when these programs are uninstalled or changed, sometimes "orphaned" (invalid) DLL registry entries are left behind.
Basically, what this means is that while the actual file path may have changed, its incorrect former location is still recorded in the Windows registry. When Windows tries looking up these incorrect file references (file locations on your PC), d3dx.dll errors can occur. In addition, malware infection may have corrupted the registry entries associated with Third-Party Application. Thus, these invalid DLL registry entries need to be repaired to fix the root of the problem.
Manually editing the Windows registry to remove invalid d3dx.dll keys is not recommended unless you are PC service professional. Incorrectly editing your registry can stop your PC from functioning and create irreversible damage to your operating system. In fact, one misplaced comma can prevent your PC from booting entirely!
Because of this risk, we highly recommend using a trusted registry cleaner such as WinThruster (Developed by Microsoft Gold Certified Partner) to scan and repair any d3dx.dll-related registry problems. Using a registry cleaner automates the process of finding invalid registry entries, missing file references (like the one causing your d3dx.dll error), and broken links within the registry. A backup is automatically created before each scan, with the ability to undo any changes in a single click, protecting you against the possibility of PC damage. The best part is that repairing registry errors can also dramatically improve system speed and performance.

Caution: Unless you an advanced PC user, we DO NOT recommend editing the Windows registry manually. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. We do not guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To manually repair your Windows registry, first you need to create a backup by exporting a portion of the registry related to d3dx.dll (eg. Third-Party Application):
      1. Click the Start button.
      2. Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
      3. While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
      4. You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
      5. Click Yes.
      6. A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
      7. Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
      8. In the Registry Editor, select the d3dx.dll-related key (eg. Third-Party Application) you want to back up.
      9. From the File menu, choose Export.
      10. In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Third-Party Application backup key.
      11. In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Third-Party Application Backup".
      12. In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
      13. Click Save.
      14. The file is then saved with a .reg file extension.
      15. You now have a backup of your d3dx.dll-related registry entry.
The next steps in manually editing your registry will not be discussed in this article due to the high risk of damaging your system. If you would like to learn more about manual registry editing, please see the links below.

      1. Windows XP

    12. Step 3: Remove or Restore D3dx.dll from the Windows Recycle Bin

This may seem like an obvious or ridiculous step, but it is very possible that your d3dx.dll might have been accidentally deleted. Therefore, it is worth checking your Recycle Bin to see if it's there.
      1. Simply double-click the Recycle Bin icon.
      2. In the upper right-hand corner, search for d3dx.dll.
      3. If d3dx.dll file appears in the search results, select it, and move it to the following directory:
        1. Windows 95/98/Me = F:\Condor
        2. Windows NT/2000 = F:\Condor
        3. Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 = F:\Condor
        4. 64-bit Windows = F:\Condor
      4. After moving your d3dx.dll file, restart your computer.

Step 4: Update Your PC Device Drivers

D3dx.dll errors can be related to corrupt or outdated device drivers. Drivers can work one day, and suddenly stop working the next day, for a variety of reasons. The good news is that you can often update the device driver to fix the DLL problem.
Finding the exact driver for your d3dx.dll-related hardware device can be extremely difficult, even directly on the Windows Software Developer or related manufacturer's website. Even if you are experienced at finding, downloading, and manually updating drivers, the process can still be very time consuming and extremely irritating. Installing the wrong driver, or simply an incompatible version of the right driver, can make your problems even worse.
Because of the time and complexity involved in updating drivers, we highly recommend using a driver update tool such as DriverDoc (Developed by Microsoft Gold Partner) to automate the process.
DriverDoc updates all of your PC device drivers, not just those associated with your DLL error. DriverDoc's proprietary One-Click Update™ technology not only ensures that you have correct driver versions for your hardware, but it also creates a backup of your current drivers before making any changes. Maintaining a driver backup provides you with the security of knowing that you can rollback any driver to a previous version if necessary. With updated device drivers, you can finally unlock new hardware features and improve the speed and performance of your PC.

          1. Windows System Restore allows you to "go back in time" with your PC to help fix your d3dx.dll problems. System Restore can return your PC's system files and programs back to a time when everything was working fine. This can potentially help you avoid hours of troubleshooting headaches associated with DLL errors.

      5. Please Note: Using System Restore will not affect your documents, pictures, or other data.
To use System Restore (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
        1. Click the Start button.
        2. In the search box, type "System Restore" and hit ENTER.
        3. In the results, click System Restore.
        4. Enter any administrator passwords (if prompted).
        5. Follow the steps in the Wizard to choose a restore point.
        6. Restore your computer.

Step 5: Install All Available Windows Updates

Microsoft is constantly updating and improving Windows system files that could be associated with d3dx.dll. Sometimes resolving your DLL problems may be as simple as updating Windows with the latest Service Pack or other patch that Microsoft releases on an ongoing basis.
To check for Windows Updates (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
          1. Click the Start button.
          2. Type "update" into the search box and hit ENTER.
          3. The Windows Update dialog box will appear.
          4. If updates are available, click the Install Updates button.
